New York City's Great White Way will have shades of green when they light up the stage.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg's PlanNYC pledge to reduce the city's carbon footprint 30 percent by 2030 has launched the "Broadway Goes Green" initiative. The plan includes recycling stage sets and replacing the conventional bulbs with more energy-efficient ones. Within the next year, all of Broadway's lights will have gone green (so far about ten theaters have already replaced about 10,000 bulbs with their more environmentally alternatives).
"By this time next year, the lights on
Broadway will burn just as bright, but the energy bills and our City's
carbon output will be lower. This commitment will raise the level of
awareness for everyone involved in these shows - including the
audiences - and that's going to have an impact that reverberates far
beyond the Big Apple," Bloomberg said in the press release on NYC.gov.
