Beauty Tips from the Kitchen

Yes Labor Day marks the (un) official end of summer, but depending on where you live, it could be warm and balmy well into October. There's nothing like a shake-up in the beauty routine to get your skin prepped for the last lingering sultry nights and the beginning of the crisp and cool fall. So, to this end Eco Scoop gives you some green ways to freshen up that don't come bottled in plastic or glass and might even be in your own kitchen.

What better time than say, on a day off from work like on Labor Day, to take some time to pamper yourself.

Herbal steam clean:

Gather some loose lavender flowers--they sell them in bulk in some health food stores, or you can use dried rose petals. Fill a pot with water and once it's boiling, throw in a good handful or two of your chosen leaves. Turn OFF the heat, remove the pan to the table and drape your head with a towel large enough to tent your face about six inches from the pan and breathe in and out for five minutes; no longer than ten.

Cool as a cucumber facial:

Next, calm down those opened pores by mixing together a tablespoon of plain yogurt with half of a cucumber. Throw it in the blender, mix well, then spread on your face for 10 minutes (yes, you can even do like they do in the movies and put two reserved slices of the cuke on your eyes.ahhhhh).  Rinse with cool water.  You'll feel rested, relaxed and refreshed and your skin will look the same.

Shine on:

This tip comes from maybe my favorite channel on the telly right now, Planet Green.

A no-frills way to control excess shine when those early first blushes of autumn pull the switcheroo and you find yourself peeling off your cardigans and sweating as you walk the two blocks to the subway. Grab a lemon from the fridge and you'll be a "glowing" goddess (instead of "perspiring," my dears).

How to is here.
